If you suffer from chronic foot pain, or foot pain as the result of an injury, you may need surgery to correct the problem. Foot surgery varies depending on the area of the foot affected, but can often be performed on an outpatient basis, where patients can go home the same day as their surgeries.
If you need foot surgery and are interested in learning about treatment options in Los Angeles, please don’t hesitate to contact La Peer’s Foot and Ankle Surgery Center of Excellence. Our team of orthopedic surgeons and podiatrists combine their skills to most effectively treat conditions and injuries of the foot. For conditions that require surgery, our foot specialists perform minimally invasive foot and ankle procedures.
Cosmetic Foot Surgery
Cosmetic foot surgery is performed on patients with a foot or toe deformity, and is typically done for not just purely cosmetic reasons but in many cases these conditions also carry a functional painful component that may require treatment. In many cases these deformities may also cause pain or the inability to wear regular shoes or high heeled shoes. In these cases, surgery may also be done for medical reasons thus addressing the cosmetic concern and the functional abnormality. Some of the most common cosmetic foot surgery procedures include:
Bunion removal – Also known as a bunionectomy, bunion surgery is performed to remove a bunion from a patient’s foot.
Hammertoe surgery – Hammertoe correction involves the straightening out of the affected, bent toe, or the shaving down of the bone protrusion.
Claw toe surgery – Claw toe surgery involves the correction of toes which are curled down at the joints near the tips of the toes.
Broken Ankle Surgery
Ankle pain is usually an indicator of an underlying injury or condition, and in some cases, may require surgery to improve. The most common ankle injury requiring surgery is a broken ankle. Broken ankle surgery involves the repair of a break or fracture in the ankle, and most procedures can be done at our outpatient surgery center. Doing this allow patients to avoid an inpatient hospital stay and the accompanying risks. Some of the most common injuries requiring ankle surgery include:
- Stress fracture in the ankle
- Sprained ankle
- Broken ankle
Additionally, patients with a broken foot or a stress fracture in the foot may require foot surgery, rather than ankle surgery.
Tarsal Tunnel Release
Tarsal tunnel release surgery is used to treat tarsal tunnel syndrome when conservative methods have failed to offer relief. The procedure involves an incision on the inner side of the ankle, and the decompression, or “release,” of the nerve.
Achilles Tendon Tear Repair
While in some cases, rest and ice may be sufficient in treating an Achilles tendon tear, in other cases surgery is needed to treat the full extent of the injury. Achilles tendon surgery typically involves an incision to the back of the leg, which allows the surgeon to stitch the Achilles tendon tear. The procedure can be done as an outpatient procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long is bunion surgery recovery?
A: While foot surgery in the past meant being off your feet and out of work for an extensive recovery period, new advances in medicine have allowed orthopedic surgeons and podiatrists to perform minimally invasive procedures. These advanced techniques allow patients to return to daily activities much faster than with prior methods. At our outpatient surgery center, patients typically are able to return to normal daily activities within just a few weeks of their procedures.
Q: How do I know if I need foot surgery?
A: When you experience foot pain that is prolonged or persistent, it is important to speak with a foot specialist who can determine the cause of the pain. You can use our foot diagram to pinpoint where your pain is, and learn about the conditions and injuries associated with that area of the foot or ankle.
